Usha Vance heads to Greenland on a visit
President Donald Trump has eyes on acquiring the Arctic island of Greenland.
Denmark, which owns Greenland, and the island’s politicians have balked at the idea.
The Trump administration added to the intrigue by sending a delegation to the island.
Second Lady Usha Vance led a group that included National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Secretary of Energy Chris Wright.
She and the delegation will “visit historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race.”
Walz and Wright visited Pituffik Space Force Base in northern Greenland which is part of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede, who favors independence from Denmark for the island, was outraged by the visit.
He told a local newspaper that his efforts at diplomacy “bounces off Donald Trump and his administration in their mission to own and control Greenland.”
Waltz joining the Second Lady on the trip set him off.
“What is the National Security Adviser doing in Greenland?” Egede asked. “The only purpose is to demonstrate power over us.”
“His mere presence in Greenland will no doubt fuel American belief in Trump’s mission — and the pressure will increase,” Egede added.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was concerned by the trip.
“The visit from the United States cannot be seen in isolation from the public statements that have been made,” Frederiksen said. “This is something we take seriously.”
Egede thought there were ulterior motives for Vance’s cultural visit.
“We are now at a point where it can no longer be described as an innocent visit from a politician’s spouse,” Egede stated. “The international community must now react.”
J.D. Vance says that Denmark isn’t a good ally
The Second Lady’s trip to Greenland came after her husband criticized Denmark during an interview on Fox News.
“Denmark, which controls Greenland, it’s not doing its job and it’s not being a good ally. So you have to ask yourself how are we going to solve that problem, solve our own national security?” Vance asked.
Trump has expressed concern about growing Chinese and Russian interest in the Arctic.
“If that means that we need to take more territorial interest in Greenland, that is what President Trump is going to do because he doesn’t care about what the Europeans scream at us. He cares about putting the interests of American citizens first,” Vance added.
The President told reporters after a cabinet meeting that Greenland was reaching out to the United States and this administration was working with the people of the island.
“I think Greenland is going to be something that maybe is in our future,” Trump said. “I think it’s important. It’s important from the standpoint of international security.”
