Tim Walz holds town halls as he mulls a potential Presidential bid
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz became a national punchline for former Vice President Kamala Harris after she picked him to be her running mate last summer.
His tendency to stick his foot in his mouth and frequent lies about his biography turned him into a deadweight for the ticket.
Walz had kept a low profile since his crushing defeat in November.
The 2028 Presidential nomination for Democrats is wide open, so he’s begun to go back out on the road with a series of town halls in Republican House districts.
He’s channeling the anger of the party’s base at Democrat leadership for not doing enough to fight back against the Trump administration.
“Our leadership’s not going to be the charismatic D.C. leader or whatever. It’s going to be the person who’s reading the room the best of where these people are at,” Walz told CNN.
Walz is holding town halls to speak with voters and call for a new direction for the Democrat Party.
The Minnesota Governor hasn’t decided on seeking a third term next year.
He added that he would feel “a sense of allegiance” to support Kamala if she ran for President again in 2028.
CNN reported that sources close to Walz said a Presidential bid in 2028 wasn’t off the table.
Some Democrats want Tim Walz to go away
Walz ended up being a drag on the Presidential ticket for Democrats last year.
He already created a controversy on his town hall tour when he bragged about Tesla’s stock going down.
“Some of you know this. On the iPhone, they’ve got that little stock app. I added Tesla to it to give me a little boost during the day — $225 and dropping,” Walz said. “And if you own one, we’re not blaming you. You can take dental floss and pull the Tesla thing off.”
He had to walk back the comment after criticism and claimed he was making a joke.
A House Democrat who represents a district that Trump won in the 2024 Election told CNN that Walz wasn’t helping.
“Progressive donors and consultants loved the Coach Walz persona, but it didn’t actually land with the rural voters and men it was designed to win over,” the House Democrat stated. “I think it looked like a performance trying to distract from the Biden record he and Harris never distanced themselves from.”
The top recruit for House Democrats skipped a town hall that Walz held in a red district the party is targeting in next year’s Midterm Elections.
“There were Democrats who won over Trump voters to win their races and will again in the future, but Tim, it’s time for you to go home. This red district tourism is giving all the wrong signals to the voters you lost,” the House Democrat added.
Walz might find his time in the national spotlight shorter than he anticipated.
