SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are trying to root out the enormous waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government’s budget.
DOGE had begun to audit the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees benefits for Medicare and Medicaid.
“Yeah, this is where the big money fraud is happening,” Musk wrote on X about Medicare and Medicaid.
Democrats are trying to falsely claim that President Donald Trump and Musk are trying to make massive cuts to Medicare and Medicaid to scare voters.
“Masquerading as a false crusade against waste, fraud, and abuse, Musk appears intent to break the programs that seniors, people with disabilities, children, and families rely on to get their health care,” U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Ed Markey (D-MA) wrote Trump after DOGE gained access to the payment system at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). “We write to say no to Elon Musk and DOGE, and demand hands off Medicare and Medicaid.”
Democrats and their media allies have been trying to downplay or outright lie about the fraud discovered by DOGE.
Journalists and Democrat Members of Congress claimed that fraud in these government-run healthcare programs was either nonexistent or negligible.
Musk argued that fraud in federal entitlement programs was the biggest in history.
“At this point, I am 100% certain that the magnitude of the fraud in federal entitlements (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Disability, etc) exceeds the combined sum of every private scam you’ve ever heard by FAR,” Musk wrote on X.

Government watchdog warns Medicare and Medicaid fraud rips off taxpayers
A government watchdog sounded the alarm on fraudulent payments at Medicare and Medicaid in a new report.
The Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General uncovered a scheme where federal and state payments for Medicare and Medicaid were misdirected by fraudsters.
“Individuals purporting to be hospital providers have targeted the Medicare and Medicaid programs by submitting fraudulent electronic funds transfer authorization requests or other schemes to divert payments for providers to fraudsters,” the Inspector General’s report stated.
The report found that scammers posing as hospitals received at least $27 million after submitting fake “electronic funds transfer authorization requests” to state agencies administering Medicaid and government contractors.
DOGE is looking to shut down this exact type of fraud by examining Medicare and Medicaid’s payment system.
“There is a potential for large losses associated with electronic funds transfer fraud, given how widely electronic funds transfer transactions are used within the healthcare industry,” the Inspector General report explained. “Recently, fraudsters who were able to gain unauthorized access to email accounts targeted the HHS grant Payment Management System, leading to millions of dollars in losses in 2023.”
