On Sunday, Schumer appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press where he addressed the calls for him to step aside from his leadership position.
Schumer dug his heels in and made it clear that Democrats will have to force him out if they want a new leader.
“Look, I’m not stepping down,” Schumer said, before adding that he knew the spending bill would kick off “a lot of controversy.”
“I did it out of pure conviction as to what a leader should do and what the right thing for America and my party was,” he said. “People disagree.”
Schumer defended his move by arguing that a government shutdown would have been “15 to 20 times worse.”
“Sometimes when you’re a leader, you have to do things to avoid a real danger that might come down the curve,” Schumer said.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) are two of Schumer’s most vocal critics.
Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders spent the past week on the road together, holding anti-Trump rallies across the country.
More than 43,000 votes have signed a petition calling for Chuck Schumer’s resignation.
Polls show Schumer’s approval rating collapsed by more than 30 points among loyal Democrats in just one week after he refused to force a government shutdown.
Only time will tell if Schumer remains the Democrat Senate Leader or if he is forced to step aside.
