It’s almost been two months since Donald Trump took office, but Democrats are still infighting over how to stop his America First agenda.
The infighting reached a fever point last week when Chuck Schumer refused to block a GOP-led continuing resolution to extend government funding by six months.
Schumer announced on Thursday that Democrats would block the bill and force a government shutdown.
And many Democrats were furious when Chuck Schumer caved in to Trump and the GOP.
MSNBC analyst and former Democrat Representative Donna Edwards called it a “black mark on Chuck Schumer.”
“The reality here is there was no message, no strategy, and, at the end of the day, no leadership,” she said. “And this is really a black mark, I think, on Chuck Schumer.”
But it wasn’t just media personalities who expressed their disagreements with Schumer.
On Sunday, Texas Democrat Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) appeared for an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s State of the Union.
Tapper instantly brought up the controversy surrounding Chuck Schumer.
“Some progressive groups are calling for new leadership in the Senate for Democrats, even House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, your leader, was asked if he supports Schumer as leader of the Senate Democrats, and he said, ‘Next question,’” Tapper began. “Do you think Senate Democrats should replace Chuck Schumer?”
“I think Senate Democrats have to sit down and take a look and decide whether or not Chuck Schumer is the one to lead in this moment,” Crockett said.
Schumer is up for re-election in 2028.
Tapper said rumors are circulating that some Democrats are talking about primarying Schumer in 2028, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
“We have heard moderates say this too – that they’re ready to support her to challenge Chuck Schumer in a Democratic primary,” Tapper said in reference to Ocasio-Cortez. “Would you get behind that?”
Crockett said it’s too early to make a decision on that right now.
However, she confessed that “there are a lot of people that are watching his leadership in this moment.”
“We don’t even know what elections will look like in four years, if we will have elections,” she said. “And so I definitely think that younger, fresher leadership may be something that many of us not, just depending on what part of the spectrum you’re on, but many Americans may be looking for, especially in the state of New York.”
Ocasio-Cortez slammed Schumer last week in an interview where she told reporters that “there is a deep sense of outrage and betrayal” over Schumer’s refusal to fight the Trump spending bill.
“And this is not just about progressive Democrats,” she continued. “This is across the board — the entire party.”
Democrats are still reeling from the crushing defeat Donald Trump handed Kamala Harris on November 7.
Their approval rating just hit an all-time low.
